5-HTP plays a role in both sleep regulation and mental balance. 5-HTP is a precursor for serotonin. Serotonin has a calming effect on brain chemistry, and plays an important role in many other bodily functions, including digestion, appetite, and the perception of physical comfort. Serotonin can also be converted to melatonin (the hormone that helps us fall and stay asleep). However, 5-HTP bypasses the light-triggering system that regulates the release of melatonin.
